An application letter, also known as a "cover letter," is sent with your resume during the job application process. A letter adds more personality to your application by providing more details about your background and interest in the position, while a resume outlines your professional skills and experience more. In this article, we explain how to write an effective and engaging job application letter.
B. Communicative Purpose
According to Colorado State University, its main objective is to get the applicant in the door for an interview and must be written well enough to attract the attention and interest of the person with the power to recommend or grant one.
C. Generic Structure
1. Heading: A letter of application should begin with both you and the employer's contact information (name, address, phone number, email) followed by the date).
2. The Salutation
- Dear Sir
- Dear Madam
- Dear Mr. Alvin
3. Body of the letter
a. Opening paragraph
Berisi maksud pelamar berupa posisi yang diinginkan sesuai lowongan yang dipublikasikan/tersedia
Contoh :
- I am writing to apply for the.....
- I wish to apply for the position as a ….
- I am interested in applying for ….
b. Middle paragraph
Menceritakan secara ringkas tentang pengalaman/pendidikan/keterampilan/kelebihan yang pelamar miliki
c. Closing paragraph
Bagian yang berisi harapan untuk mendapat perhatian
Contoh:
- I hope my qualifications and working experiences could be your consideration and look forward to your reply.
- I am very much willing to come over for a personal interview with you anytime during office hours
- If you need any further information, you may contact me at 047.791.2991. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
4. Complimentary Close ( Salam Penutup)
Contoh: as : Best / Sincerely / Sincerely yours / Faithfully / Respectfully yours, followed by your name.
5. Signature(Tanda Tangan)

I am a graduate student in Computer Science at Bina Nusantara University, and I will be awarded an M.S. degree in June 2011. I am currently looking for a position related to Databes/Graphics Pakage Design in the research and development department of a major company.
Before coming to Bina Nusantara University, I designed, supervised, and completed a CAD system. The fuction vector, character and curve generation, windowing, shading, and transportmations.
At Bina Nusantara, my researce work involves Compilation of Relational Queries into Network DML. To enhance my blackground, I have taken some courses in computer graphics and database, and I have experience in and an understanding of the design of database. With this strong blackground, I certainly belive that I am competent to meet challenging tasks and can make a good contribution to your company.
